What is the official program name?

The official program name is GST / HST New Housing Rebate.

Who is eligible for the Home Construction Rebate?

The Home Construction Rebate is available to homeowners that either: i) built a new home in the past 2 years, ii) renovated over 90% of their home in the past 2 years, iii) built a home addition in the past 2 years.

How much can be claimed for the Home Construction Rebate?

The maximum available rebate for the Home Construction Rebate is $16,080, which is based on spending approximately $280,000 or more on the home construction. For projects less than this amount, the rebate that can be claimed is proportionate to the amount of HST spent on the project.

What documents need to be provided for the application?

You’ll need to provide the construction invoices, as well as the building permit number.

Does the Home Construction Rebate apply to cottages and rental properties?

The Home Construction Rebate is only applicable for principle residences.

Am I eligible for the Home Construction Rebate if my home is being rebuilt with insurance proceeds?

Homes that are either rebuilt or substantially renovated through an insurance claim can still claim the rebate.

For New Construction Condo Landlords

What is the official program name?

The official program name is GST / HST New Residential Rental Property Rebate.

Who is eligible for the Rental Rebate?

The Rental Rebate is available to individuals and corporations that have purchased a brand new home or condo and are renting it out. In order to apply you must have a 1 year lease in place with a tenant.

How much can be claimed for the Rental Rebate?

The maximum available rebate for the Rental Rebate is $30,000, which is based on the purchase price of the home / condo.

What documents need to be provided for the application?

You’ll need to provide: i) agreement of purchase and sale, ii) closing statement of adjustments, iii) copy of 1 year lease agreement.

Does the Rental Rebate apply to cottages?

The Rental Rebate is not applicable to cottage properties.

Is the rebate taxable?

Good news! The rebate is non-taxable.
